Semper Fi : Stand

When you look at the stories of “the three” they all have one thing in common, at one point they stood their ground.  All three were in battles that looked unwinable.  In fact all three were running with other’s headlong in retreat.  But at one point they stopped turned and started fighting.  They choose a spot and in effect said to themselves, “I’m not moving.”  I note also that in all three stories they are alone.

As much as I love the church, friends, and would like to be married I have to remind myself that faith is a personal decision.  At some point you have to pick your ground and decide to fight to the death.  This points me to Ephesians 6: 10 “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication”  It’s noteworthy that Paul says this after giving the most detailed instruction about Church life.  He paints the imagry of a battle enjoined against the barbarian horde.  “…and having done all, stand firm.”  This battle rages after all the service, growth in Godliness, and sacrificial love of others.  Even after you do all that you look up and see the authorities and cosmic powers in battle formations screaming, howling, beating their weapons together preparing to charge. How do you stand against that onslaught?  Next posts: The full armor
